Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] rubynye:

The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write AND give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, etc.) or a time period (Ancient Rome, Renaissance England, etc). I will then explain what story from that fandom I would write for that AU.

This sounds like a lot of fun and possibly inspiring.

Well, huh.

The problem would be that the spectators might be too far to know what's going on, and there would be no way to know which athlete was which. So they'd invent a way - a crier and a notice board, plus numbers painted on the athletes (and maybe their cities, too) so people would for whom to cheer or jeer.

And they'd joke and tease each other in between.

So, basically - nothing different. :)

Harriet Vane, adventuress and author, is traveling with her lover, the aristocratic Lord Peter, in search of time away from both of their busy lives, when a series of small crimes seems to infect their starship, and all blame seems to go to the captain, a man of utmost integrity and reputation. During the course of their investigation, the very worst happens and a crewmember is found brutally murdered, by the captain's prized antique sword.

Can they solve this mystery and find the true killer?

Hmmm.

1st Lt. John Sheppard has just had to assume the command of HMS Atlantis, a small frigate currently sailing the South Pacific and out of contact with Home, after his commander was killed by pirates. The commander's widow and a small collection of naturalists, headed by Rodney McKay (a professor from Edinburgh) are also on board, some with wives, and the ship is dangerously low on stores. He has to deal with a crew who doesn't know him, as he stepped aboard very recently, the academics, several groups of pirates and dangerously low stores.

And Rodney.

This is fun. Here's another: Piotr Vorkosigan and Ezar Vorbarra during I, Claudius, possibly featuring Serg as Caligula.

I don't know if I could do that any better than Her Ladyship.

Piotr and Ezar are very much in despair - Serg is completely out of control and the one man they trust to take care of things has been exiled to the far reaches of the Empire, leaving only his son to stand up to the emperor.

And what a son - brilliant, but physically fragile and often ill, plus prone to fits either mania or depression, and utterly unable to follow orders and yet utterly loyal.

Their only hope is to use this monster to protect Serg's son and get him to the throne in one piece.

Miles Vorkosigan in a steampunk AU, with whichever of his supporting cast tickles your fancy.
