No knitting. And other stuff

It's chol hamoed Sukkot, which means "half-holiday". People who can stay home from work, and while cooking, shopping, driving and things like that are certainly permitted, other things are not.

After looking around on line (and seeing no sources but a general consensus) and, well, not wanting to ask our rabbi - I'm putting my current knitting project on hold until Saturday night.

And I just got my new swift and winder, too. Can't use them until I'm ready for the next project, and I don't want to start a new one until I finish the current one, so I can't play with my new toys. :(

Meanwhile, I'm trying to catch up on four days of missed television during premiere time. Yeah, not fun.

I taped SG:A and we watched it. I'll catch the rebroadcast of Top Chef at five today (or tape it, anyway). I watched Survivor on streamig video,and will probably do the same for Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy. I'll certainly watch FNL on streaming video, as that's how I watched it in the first place, and it's one fewer thing to tape on Friday night. I'm torn about Supernatural, actually- the main problem is that 9PM is more or less dinner hour here, so I might as well watch it at another time, too. (Yeah, I'd like to eat at a normal hour, but I also want to eat with husband person.)

Clearly, what I really need is a DVR.

Heroes and Bionic Woman (which, admittedly, I'm worried about watching because of bad reviews/good memories) are still on our TiVo; I can burn MPEGs to disk and snail mail them to you.

Heroes isn't a problem, as it' s on Monday night (and NBC streams it), and I'm not at all interested in Bionic Woman. Thank you anyway.

Not knitting during chol hamoed is one of those things that I don't observe. My rationale is that if this is supposed to be promoting simchat yom tov, it would make me very unhappy to not be knitting during chol hamoed. I'm sure this is shaky halacha, but it is possible to get a heter, if you have a nice rabbi.

Instead, I played with my Mary Frances Knitting and Crocheting Book.

Meaning I took out my crochet hook and some yarn and practiced single and double crochet and then crocheted a quarter of a doll's sweater and then ripped it out.

Turns out, I can still crochet. Not that that was in doubt.

Zilch. Zero. None.

But my excuse to myself was that I was not making anything useful, and, indeed, I was ripping it out right away. So it wasn't permanent.

(Then I made something permanent, but it's completely and utterly useless.)

I never understood that stuff. What is the point of being bored out of your mind? If you knit for a living, then maybe I could understand taking a break, but if you do it to relax and it's just a hobby, then I don't see any problem with it during chol hamoed.

It's a weird one. I was told no knitting last year and sort of ignored it, and then Jonathan brought it up.

(And I've paid for the crocheting I did yesterday. My hand *hurts*.)

In Rav Soae's halachic guide "Practical Guide to Shabbat and Yom Tov", it is stated that during Chol Hamoed, one cannot "mend garments or fix shoes" on Chol Hamoed. This citation can be found on the internet at:

So I guess it depends on what you knit.
