It comes of indiscriminate friending and having many large circles of interest - I started with a largish circle of people from Sentinel fandom, plus there's all the people from filk and general sf fandom, and the people I know in real life, and the folks I've found from weirdjews2 and then there's Harry Potter and SGA and Bujold, and all of them seem to intersect.
It don't have the largest friendslist on LJ (thank goodness), but it is well-supplied with birthdays.
