I just signed up at the local gym - a couples membership.

I took a tour of the women's gym - *nice* locker room with steam room and private shower stalls and a wig station, big room crowded with ellipticals, step machines, treadmills and bikes, and a big room for classes.

The women were of all ages and sizes, which was cool. The only dress code is sneakers, though. Jonathan told me that many of the men wear street clothes. Apparently, so do the women. I saw women in skirts and sheitels working out. I also saw one in a skirt and camisole on a step machine.

Whatever. I have stretch pants and t-shirts. If I keep this up, I'll reward myself with yoga pants.

I also took the classes option, so I'll be taking, I think, kickboxing and yoga. This way I'll get some martial arts and flexibility training.

And I'll also push Jonathan to go.

Jonathan told me that many of the men wear street clothes.

What does 'street clothes' mean in this context? t-shirts and jeans? that seems fairly sensible for exercising, although jeans can be a bit too heavy sometimes.

Jeans are not only heavy but inflexible compared to other exercise clothing.

true dat! I found out once, while dancing in jeans, that although I could do a drop in them, I couldn't get back up...

oh -- sorry!

a drop (in bellydance anyway) is any move that takes you from standing to on the floor. usually, if someone just says "a drop", they mean one where you go from standing to -- ok, I can't really describe the position, so I'll describe it from how you'd get into it normally.

Say you're kneeling, knees shoulder-width apart, and you start to lean backwards. Farther back. All the way back, until your bum is either on or between your feet, and your shoulders just above the floor.

when I say "a drop" like that, what I mean is going from standing (or spinning) to that position. This can be dangerous, as you might guess. here's a short youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sA1ujjtOv4) of a woman doing a "Turkish drop" (done while spinning, considered dangerous enough that some people won't teach them).

I just do 'em from standing!

Oh, yeah. At least the women chose to wear full skirts.

Coolio! I hope you enjoy it. I'm not a gym person and never have been, but for some folks it works out very well indeed!

(using rugby icon because just back from practice. in the sleet. good times. a gym would have been MUCH more comfy.)

I used to enjoy doing weights and the bike and so on, and I think I might enjoy the yoga classes, and I'm sure I'll enjoy kickboxing.

I just need to *move.*
