mamadebHe just gave me a dozen roses, mixed with baby's breath. He wanted to buy three more, but they came in sets of twelve and couldn't be broken up. And he wrote me a card.
Together, not touching, we trimmed them down to size to fit in our best vase, the one we got fifteen years ago, and they grace my table. Thorns and all, but that's the way it should be.
I can't talk, but I whispered my joy and my surprise and how much I loved him for this, and how beautiful they are - deep red over crystal. And there was a card that he wrote at random at first, but then it all made sense.
And I hugged myself and looked at him and he smiled, and that smile made me want to cry, he was so joyful.
Fifteen years.
Roses and thorns, and all worth it.
