Extraordinary

I was reading the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen this evening. This is a comic set in late Victorian or early Edwardian times. I'm not sure, since I haven't read the first volume, but the gimmick is that the "League" consists of men like Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Alan Quatermain, the Invisible Man and Captain Nemo. Which makes sense because the protagonists of those books were not unlike the superheroes of today's comics, except for the lack of tights.

And that got me thinking along other lines. Dr. Doolittle. Mary Poppins. And as I thought of Mary Poppins, another thought came to mind...Jane and Michael and maybe their younger brother and sisters must have pledged Gryffindor.

If you enjoy speculating along these lines, try picking up (if you can find them, since they're long out of print) Phillip Jose Farmer's fictional biographies of Tarzan and Doc Save (Tarzan Alive! and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, respectively), in which he weaves the premise that all the pulp heroes we read about existed in the same universe and most, of not all, were descended from a group of five families irradiated by a meterotie in Wold Newton, England, in the 18th Century and thus genetically predisposed towards heroics and derring-do.

I read the Tarzan. I found it filed under "T" in my town library. I was much amused.

I mean, it should have been "G", no?
