My spoiler policy:
I am responsible for my own spoilage. If I choose to read lj before I finish the book, and cannot resist poking at cut-tags, that's my problem, or if I read a cut-tag that is more informative than it should be - also my problem.
I trust that people will try to put things under uninformative cut-tags, but I know that mistakes happen.
I will also do the same for my own lj - all essays, stories, filks and rants referring to HPB will be cut-tagged for the next three months. Which is what I normally do anyway, but for that time period, I'll say "spoiler warning". Also be aware that a post that is, in itself, spoiler-free might have spoilers in the comments.
This is where Shabbat becomes really, really *good*. I won't get a chance to read LJ until Saturday night anyway, by which time I'll be deep in the book.
(On another note: eating a large burger at 11PM is a *very* bad thing for my tummy.)

I've got a dastardly plan for getting the book during shabbos, which, though it doesn't technically transgress shabbos, is probably walking a very thin line.

I have a copy arriving on Shabbos, but I have a dastardly plan for getting a copy before that one arrives. With OotP, I opened my copy on shabbos, but I wasn't sure if that was okay. I work on the same theory you work on with regards to opening packages.
I have a prepaid copy on reserve at Borders (less than a mile from my house). They are having a reading party at 9pm, with the actual book release at midnight. I'm walking down there with a friend at midnight, and will be picking up my copy. There's an eruv. There are no electronic doors at borders. My friend is taking care of the details of picking up the book (she's picking up two copies).
Like I said, it walks a fine line, and probably isn't in the spirit of shabbos. And yet, somehow, I can't resist.

If I had a bookstore in walking distance and could make similar arrangements, I just might have - or if I were going to Confluence this weekend, or if, as easily could have happened, they'd chosen to release the book the weekend of Contata. And while a literary con like Confluence can manage with a large percentage of its members reading or waiting to read the same book, I don't think a filk con could have.
Confluence is having a midnight book sale Friday night.

I agree with you. In fact, I'm going to pinch this for my own related post on LJ later. We're all grownups; if someone clearly marks the post "SPOILER" and I click, well, it's my lookout.
