What do you do when your current work-in-progress is due to be jossed in just over two weeks and there's no way you'll be finished before then?

Do I not worry that the story takes place in an entirely alternate 6th Year and post when it's done? Or do I post what I have on July 15th, allow it to be completely contradicted the next day and then finish it anyway? I do want to finish it. It's starting to grow an interesting plot over and above the gimmick and I like what the characters are doing. But it takes place 6th year and I can tell you right now that it will be impossible to re-edit to fit book 6.

So, which would be better? Wait until it's finished anyway? Or post what I will have on July 15th just to get it out there?

Wait until it's finished. I'll enjoy my fic, AU or otherwise, no matter what JKR writes. :)

I vote yes on this one.

Wait until it's finished. My first *serious* HP story was almost finished just before OotP, but I wasn't quite ready to post, so I waited.

Needless to say, it was set during Harry's seventh year, and Sirius featured prominantly. *g*

I'm *still* glad I waited until the story was right.

If you have a firm idea where you want it to go and have the impetus to write then go ahead and finish it. I'm a firm believer in not quashing the impulse to write - as it happens to me so infrequently (g). I also happen to love au's so being non-canon doesn't bother me.

I would vote for whichever you are in the habit of doing. If you prefer to post WIP, then go ahead and post, and continue. If you prefer to post finished works, then wait until you're finished. No one will mind an AU that began before the book was released. No one minds AUs that are written *after* the books are released, if someone wants to go a different route than the book did!

You are writing fanfic. The release of a new volume of canon makes no difference on the work you are posting, except as to what you label it when it's done. :)
