My husband took a longish walk today on his way to the subway, to make up for not going to gym, I think.

He passed my childhood home, which is in this neighborhood. I lived there for ten years, from ages 3 to 13.

It's for sale. And we're talking about buying a house.

Oh, yeah.

It's somewhat out of our price range and a tad far from where we really want to live, but, my goodness.

I have pretty good memories of that place. It's where I first learned to love Alcott and Bronte; it's also where I first learned to love science fiction and comic books.

And it's been renovated a few times since, so while it would be weirdly familiar, I'm sure my old bedroom isn't pink anymore. It's been. We moved out in 1976. So. 28 years. Long time.

On the other hand - okay. It would be big time weird to sleep in my parents' bedroom. :)

Oh, we are, but it's probably not going to happen.

I work in a real estate agency. I'll call them tomorrow and see if someone will run comps for me.

Can you do it? Brooklyn is skyrocketing right now, so it may be a good time to do it.

Okay, just got off the phone with my ma about other issues....and asked her about houses in Central Brooklyn ( I know you are in Flatbush- she is in Crown Heights/BEd Stuy area)

Holy Kamooly.

I promise not to complain about the prices of homes here in POrtland ever again.

*hugs you on finding your childhood house, anyways*

Do it. Do it. Our society these days is so mobile, the opportunity to have a true family home is so rare. This kind of serendipity shouldn't be wasted.

We're going to the Open house on Sunday, but honestly, I don't think we can swing the money.

So, I'll be going to squee.

Well, on the positive side, you know all the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the house. You know where the squeaky boards are and how the water heater space is an inch too small for the size heater you'd really like and where the likely mouse holes are, for example.

On the negative side, weirdness and what I think of as psychic incongruity. Your brain/emotions would constantly be "zinging" over things, rooms, moments. Enjoy your squee-age. ;-)

My cousin did that. SHe moved into the house that her parents had lived in when she was a kid.
It was weird to visit her. She said that it was weird to be there for the first month or so, but since she didnt have any of her parents' old furniture or anything and the kitchen had been redone, the weirdness quickly dissipated.
