Last Tuesday, my boss finally got tired of watching my screen flick when he walked past. It was obvious by my productivity and that flicking screen (alt-tab - so useful, that) that I was doing something illicit.

I was. I was reading and posting to LJ. Oh, I was doing the stuff that had to be done then, but I had this enormous backlog of work that I hadn't caught up on.

So he yelled at me (in private) and told me I was not to do "my own stuff" at work. Or, well.

I took him at his word and told him that I would no longer do "my own stuff." I defined, to myself, "my own stuff" as LiveJournal and

I was. I was reading and posting to LJ. Oh, I was doing the stuff that had to be done then, but I had this enormous backlog of work that I hadn't caught up on.

So he yelled at me (in private) and told me I was not to do "my own stuff" at work. Or, well.

I took him at his word and told him that I would no longer do "my own stuff." I defined, to myself, "my own stuff" as LiveJournal and <a href="http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com>TWoP</a>, plus writing and <a href="http://www.ucomics.com">uComics</a> - anything that was not actual work. He didn't need to know that. I did.

It's been three workdays since then. On Wednesday, I cleared off all the backlog - which shows how much time I'd wasted. And made myself not go on to the websites even though the work was done and I was bored and no one was there. I managed the same yesterday.

Today wasn't so great - I found myself doing make work of retyping lists and copying forms and so on just to not go nuts, and I did read some TWoP and a couple of online magazines.

Next week, when I go in, I'm going to block TWoP and LJ. I just don't know what I'll do when the work runs out. I always have the phone, of course, and people do have rental listings for me to take care of, and I can sometimes get away with handwriting a bit of a story. I'll manage. Because he's right. It's not fair for me to do "my own stuff' when they're paying me to work.

(Also, they need to have a receptionist and so on, but they're going through a tight spot moneywise right now, which is when he gets testy.)

Understand. I'm ADDled, so my mind finds distractions. Was worse because I was working tech support, a position that has a lot of downtime waiting for the phone to ring.
