Last night, my husband bought me a copy of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Meeting and Event Planning.

This book was written by mundanes for mundanes. Hense, I suppose, the title. There was a useful chapter on hotel negotiation, and a page or two about badge creation (no smaller than 36 points for the member's first or chosen name), but the rest..."What is the goal of this meeting?" with a list of possibilities, none of which were "Getting together as sf fen to talk and sing." :)

Even in their lists of types of meetings, there was nothing about a "gathering of fen to celebrate fandom." Sigh.

Today, one of the agents dropped by before he left for Florida with his wife. To pick up the baby boy they're adopting. They found out last night, and will be in Florida for a couple of weeks. It's a private adoption, done through a lawyer.

He's going to give me the name of the lawyer. And if we have to spend two weeks someplace, we have a network of people we can rely upon for help.

But we need to see a counselor first. And I have this convention...

Eeek.

Business cons frighten me. Who'd want to go to one? You know, deliberately. :shudder:

A few weeks ago, I had to go to a conference for employees of my current company. Thursday afternoon, we had a "motivational speaker" who included the Left Behind series on his recommended-reading list. Friday afternoon, we had an hours-long seminar on our "positioning statement", which culminated with all 250 of us standing up and reciting the statement in unison.

It's a good thing I don't drink.

I'm telling you this with all the good will and good wishes I have, and not as some kind of dump all over you rain on your parade kind of thing:
Florida is a sewer of bad adoption practice.

I know you want to be a mom, and I can certainly sympathize with that, but I don't think you want to do it at any cost, by any means necessary.

Tread carefully. It's a jungle out there, and I'm not just talking about the Everglades.

email me privately for more information.

The lawyer in this case is someone whose been doing this for twenty years - he and his wife are also certified social workers. I'm getting the picture that this *happens* to be in Florida. My boss who used the same lawyer got his son in Las Vegas, so it could be anywhere.

However, expect an email. Thank you.
