I enjoyed this drabble, which left me feeling both satisfied and wanting more, sort of like eating a really marvelous dessert.
One of the things I'm enjoying about your HP pieces is the way you take little bits of canon and use them to draw interesting conclusions about character and/or social mores.
The story you posted a while back, Wolf, was just phenomenal in that respect. I liked the way you expanded upon the concept of prejudice against werewolves (Remus can't inherit, etc) and the (originating from you, I think)idea of wills spelled to be read only after death. And the bit you just sort of dropped into the story about how the Blacks might bind their house-elves had me nodding my head and thinking oh, yeah. Exactly.
Even more impressive to me was the way you wrote Harry. One of my pet peeves in this fandom is how shallowly Harry tends to be written. This is one of the few pieces I've read that really gets Harry's generosity of spirit--it's more than just bravery or impulsivity. He has a kind of open-heartedness that makes it feel plausible that he'd make Remus the kind of offer he did in your story.
But of course, he's still a few sandwiches short of a picnic when it comes to understanding himself. The last line of that story just about killed me. The irony of Harry hoping he can find someone to love--because of course, why else would he make such an offer, if not out of love.
And I also think this is one of the few stories that pulls off making Harry both heartbreakingly young and also wiser than his years--without, you know, dropping an authorial anvil on our heads.
If I had a nickel for every time I've read something along these lines:
"Harry's horrific experiences had changed him, made him wiser than his years," thought Snape/Remus/Hermione/MarySue, as s/he gazed at the green-eyed youth.
Sorry about the delay in feedback--I've been away from LJ for a few months due to my father's illness and death, and I wanted to refrain from posting until after his sloshim.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
If you need to talk to someone - I lost my own father a few years ago. When my year of aveilut was over, I posted something on my webpage about it.
On a less serious note:
Thank you! Harry is very much his age, but he's also much older because of what he's seen and done, but saying so doesn't work. And he does love Remus, and he did love Sirius.
And the spelled wills just made sense. As did Kreacher's death and the treatment of werewolves and...
