On an upside, some fandoms seem to get a kick in the butt from a denial of canon. (Look at TPM!) And hey, the response to this might bring some gorgeous aftermath fic ...
For me, it depends on my mood. I think what I like best are those stories that manage to work around canon, taking something that happened and coming up with a way to change how things end up.
One things for sure, OotP is bound to shake up the fandom.
I don't cry over character deaths - heck, I only got a bit misty-eyed at the end of The Return of the King - but reading that pulled me was as close as I've ever come to breaking down and bawling over an event in a book.
