I love that chapter. I'm sure many of you love that chapter. I even said that to myself when it came up on my Palm - "I love this chapter."

I have a vague memory of baking a cake on on my own at younger than nine - more like seven. There are photos of me taking it out of the oven, but I can't remember at what stage I asked for help. Probably that point - I was responsible like that, if not in other ways. But that was a modern electric oven. It wasn't dangerously hot unless you touched something metal, and I knew that. I can still remember how that cake tasted.
I agree with you totally about the knives, fire (and hot cast-iron) and lack of supervision. The *steak knives* in my house were blunt enough that I could run them up and down my finger without making a dent. And yeah, nine year old girls did actual family cooking at that point in time, but they died too.
