Next week, my Pakua master turns 19. (I'm being taught by someone young enough to be my daughter. The world is getting scary.)

I want to get her a present. I have no idea what, so I'm tossing it out to the collected wisdom of my friends list.

She's 19. She's very bright but not interested in reading, although she does like manga. Including yaoi manga. She's almost inhumanly energetic and perky, but that could be a function of her age. She's very sweet.

She adores animals and plans to be a vet. She likes men a *lot*. She's not into clothes or jewelery. She likes action type movies.

So, you think maybe a stuffed animal?

Honestly? Liking stuffed animals usually goes along with liking clothes, jewellery, dolls and other 'femmy' stuff.

I'd get her manga.

If she likes animals and plans to be a vet ... why not a small donation to an animal charity (WWF or your local SPCA or something) in her name.

Barring that, gift certificates for a coffee house (like one of those starbucks cards) or movies (theatre or rentals). A small treat she might not otherwise be able to indulge.

She finds them on her own.

Usually older black belts.

The problem is - I don't know what she hasn't read yet. Otherwise, yeah.

The donation might work, except she's a very...concrete 19 year old. Still, something to think about.

She goes to movies often, but a gift certificate to a nice theater would work very well.

The coffeehouse, not so much. She's Mormon. :)

Speaking of yaoi manga, I'm new on the yaoi scene, but I've had "Banana Fish" strongly recommended to me (from someone in Japan, yet) and as it's not popular like say, Gravitation, she may not have it.

I like "Please Save My Earth", which has a few... overtones, but may be too shoujo-ish and sweet for her.

As for action, there's always Trigun (no yaoi but the fandom in crammed with it) or Hellsing (Yay!)

or a gift certificate to your local bookstore that sells manga - so she can pick up something she doesn't already have. there are lots of really good series out there and and more upcoming, but not knowing what's she's already read makes picking it out yourself problematic.

Those are too expensive, and awfully hard to return.

Hm. I'm going to buck the trend and say to get her an action movie. Specifically, I'd suggest The Transporter, which is PG-13, sexy, and has tons of kickass actiony martial-artsy fighting.

I think maybe some sort of assortment of nifty japanese import toys?

Actually a $15 gift certificate to the local music store would be good. It will buy a dvd or a cd, and she can pick what she wants
