Aunt Debbie
Sep. 25th, 2009 04:20 pmI'd just gotten home from shopping, and was in fact talking to my mother-in-law on the landline when my cellphone rang.
A strange woman asked if I were "Debbie." Turns out, it was someone from my niece's school. Her biological father was going to be an hour late picking up, and they had no way of keeping her that long. Their information card is out of date, so I do my best, even calling the hospital where her mother works. No luck. Also, the hospital is in Manhattan, and my brother-in-law is a professor in Queens College (he has tenure!!!) so they were no closer.
So, I put my chicken in the oven and called a car service and picked her up. (Got a HUGE hug from her. I love my Zoe-niece.) And her daddy was waiting for her just as we got out of the car, so it all worked out well. And I got a nice conversation about chameleons and chickens - they spent the summer on their farm in Ithaca - and times tables and well, all the things you talk about with bright 7 year olds.
