My current Shabbat reading is Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - one of [livejournal.com profile] jonbaker's birthday gifts. Guess how old he is. :) We finally got the omnibus edition, after who knows how many years.

It's as brilliant as ever, and like all good SF, a bit of a snapshot of the times in which is was written - who needs to operate digital watches anymore? (For those born after 1975 or so, digital watches were originally LEDs - light emitting diodes. Little red numbers on a black background - and they ate up power. So, in order to make the batteries last longer, the display stayed off. In order to see the time, you had to press a tiny button on the side. As soon as it was economically feasible to make LCD displays instead, the old ones vanished. I still remember my first digital watch fondly, but it was awkward to use. So they had to be operated.)

The end of the first book reassured me as to my sanity - when I watched the latest movie, I was confused about that gun thing at the end, since I had no memory of it.

Turns out I was right - they took the name of the Universal Perspective thing and made a weapon out of it for the movie.

Otherwise, a perfectly nice weekend was marred by a very bad night's sleep - I just couldn't get *sleepy* Saturday night. And I'm not sure why - I'd been reasonably active, my afternoon nap was short, I'd had a fairly heavy lunch and I wasn't either upset or hormonal. It just didn't happen. Annoying. In responses, I spent Sunday vegging, knitting and napping, and got a good night's sleep last night - so good I woke up late this morning. :/.

At least, I'm working on my mother-in-law's scarf again.
